Vasco Ribeiro and Teresa Bonvalot in fifth place in France
Vasco Ribeiro was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Leonardo Fioravanti, winning 5.94 points (4.47 and 1.67), against 8.7 (4.5 and 4.2) of the Italian, after having overcome the Frenchman Maxime Huscenot in the second round.
The two Portuguese were relegated for this playoff, after having integrated the same ‘heat’ in the first round, won by Fioravanti.
In the women’s competition, also played on the beach of Chambre d’Amour, Teresa Bonvalot was defeated by the Frenchwoman Pauline Ado, in the quarter-finals, adding an insufficient 5.17 points (2.67 and 2.5) compared to 6.64 ( 3.17 and 3.47) of the opponent.
The national champion in 2020, 2014 and 2015 reached the ‘quarters’ after eliminating compatriot Yolanda Hopkins in the repechage, leaving her predecessor in the history of the Portuguese title for ninth place.
Hopkins had been relegated to the second round by Ado, while Bonvalot was beaten by another Frenchwoman, Vahine Fierro, on her debut in the competition.
After the French Rendez-Vous, and with the cancellation of the world circuit for 2021, the world surfing elite, male and female, head to Portugal, where they will compete in the MEO Portugal Cup, between Monday and Friday, in a competition to be played in the Ericeira or Peniche.
