The Amadora Comic Book Awards (PBDA) are an initiative of the Amadora City Council, within the scope of Amadora BD which, since 1990, has distinguished Portuguese and international comic book authors.

In 2023, Amadora BD reaffirms its commitment and mission to invest in authors and comics and awards for the third consecutive year a cash prize worth €5,000 for the Best Comic Book by a Portuguese Author.

For over 30 years, the Festival has supported the production of works of this literary genre, in a national context and with an international impact.

Created in 1990, Amadora BD is an initiative of the Amadora City Council, which aims to promote comics. Organized continuously since its creation, Amadora BD is the most important comics festival in Portugal and one of the most acclaimed at the European level.

The annual program brings together authors, publishers, agents and collectors of different nationalities in autograph sessions, exhibitions, launches, workshops and presentations. Within the scope of Amadora BD, the Amadora Comics Awards recognize, every year, the authors and young people who stand out in the Comics scene.

The 34th edition of Amadora BD will take place from the 19th to the 29th of October 2023, once again occupying 3 different locations in the city of Amadora: Ski Skate Amadora Park (Central Center), Artur Bual Municipal Gallery and Bedeteca da Amadora – Fernando Piteira Santos Library.

Presenting itself as a Festival for everyone, in 2023 Amadora BD is investing in generalist content that will appeal to a wider and wider audience, thus promoting its mission of creating and educating new comic book readers. Under the theme ‘Timeless Classics’, the exhibition celebrates the birthdays of some of the most emblematic characters in international comics – Superman, Tex, Mônica and Garfield – and includes, among others, the exhibitions The Great Gatsby, by Jorge Coelho, The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, by Filipe Andrade, a retrospective, by Miguelanxo Prado and the work that won the award for Best Comic Book by a Portuguese Author in the 2022 edition of the Amadora Comics Awards, Estes Dias, by Bernardo Majer

The event brings to Portugal more than a dozen prestigious authors of the world’s comics, with emphasis on the presence of one of Superman’s greatest designers, Mick Gray, who for the first time participates in a European festival and the return to Portugal of Mauricio Sousa, Bob McLeod, Jon Bogdanove and Miguelanxo Prado.
