Veselko defeated in the round of 16

Francisca Veselko won the 9th position in Baliito Pro, the third stage of the Challenger Series 2024 circuit. The Portuguese surfer was eliminated this Sunday in the round of 16 of the South African race, still achieving the best result of the season on a personal level in this circuit.

Kika was the only Portuguese surfer to reach the round of 16, ahead of Bella Kenworthy on Heat 8. The Portuguese even started the heat over, but Kenworthy operated the turnaround in the middle of the dispute, winning with 10.60 points against 9.27.

Despite the elimination, Kika should be able to climb some places and enter the top 20 of the ranking, where Yolanda Hopkins was the best Portuguese entry for this stage, in 7th place. Still, after the South African race ends there will be no Portuguese in the top 10 of a ranking that qualifies the top five for next year’s world circuit.

Ballito turned out not to be a memorable event for the Portuguese. In addition to Veselko’s performance, Teresa Bonvalot finished in 17th place, Mafalda Lopes in 25th place and Yolanda Hopkins in 41st place. On the male side, there is no Portuguese in the top 50 of the ranking, after Frederico Morais and Guilherme Ribeiro have finished in the 49th position and the national champion Joaquim Chaves has been 73.

After Ballito, the Challenger Series circuit will travel to California from August 6-11 for the now traditional US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. The North American event will be the fourth and penultimate stage of the season and will mark the beginning of the final stretch of the fight for qualification for next year’s World Tour.
