The Danish wind power multinational Vestas formally opens its new facilities in Portugal in Matosinhos on Tuesday with an investment of ten million euros to be made in the country by 2020.
According to a company source, the opening at the Lionesa business complex in Matosinhos of the Center for Research and Development (R & D) of the manufacturer of wind turbines for wind farms has already created two hundred jobs in the region, which should be added more 80 by the end of the year.
Lionesa’s management expects to reach a total of 350 new jobs created by Vestas (in areas such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer engineering) in that innovation center, which will work in conjunction with others already in countries such as Denmark (headquarters), Germany, Norway, United Kingdom or India.
The formal inauguration ceremony of the new facilities will be attended by the Minister of Economy, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, the Secretary of State for Industry, Ana Lehman, and the Secretary of State for Energy, Jorge Seguro Sanches, and will include a visit to the new Vestas virtual reality room.
The Danish multinational, which manufactures, installs and maintains wind turbines, is represented in 77 countries and has more than 23,000 workers.
In February, during a visit by the Minister of Economy to the Matosinhos facilities, the company’s vice president, Jorge Magalhães, who is responsible for the engineering center in Portugal and India, said that Vestas continued to recruit professionals in the areas of mechanics , electrical, electrotechnical and software, for which it planned to increase “substantially” the number of jobs in the coming years.
About the investment of ten million euros in Portugal, the manager explained that there will be no productive activity in the country, but rather the design of services and products for the global market.
Stating “very satisfied” with the quality of the Portuguese workers, Jorge Magalhães advanced at the time that Vestas will work with universities and institutions in the elaboration of projects.
