The 27th of September is World Tourism Day and the Municipality of Viana do Castelo, in conjunction with local partners, has prepared a varied program to mark the event with various initiatives, free entrances and special prices.
On Saturday, September 25, the program includes the “Passos de Memória” walk, with the Trilho dos Sobreiros | PR23, a route located in Serra da Padela, in Carvoeiro and which is part of the Municipal Network of Pedestrian Routes.
On Monday, September 27th, the Museum of Decorative Arts and the Costume Museum will be open exceptionally, with free entry, and it is possible to visit the permanent and temporary exhibitions during normal opening hours (10 am to 6 pm). The visit to the Casa dos Nichos – Archeology Center, the Centro de Mar and the Interpretative Center of the Portuguese Way of the Coast is also free.
Citânia de Santa Luzia, known locally as the “old city”, will also be open exceptionally this Monday, with free entry and will promote guided tours, with advance booking until 24 September. Citânia is one of the best known forts in Northern Portugal and one of the most important for the study of Proto-History and the Romanization of Alto Minho.
Travel on the Funicular de Santa Luzia, between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm, will have a 50% discount, so that tourists can take advantage of the route that connects the city center of Viana do Castelo to Monte de Santa Luzia, in an extension of 650 meters, in a journey of about six minutes.
Visits to the Gil Eannes hospital ship will also have a 50% discount, with the visitor having the opportunity to do the reconnaissance in loco and “navigate” through the various spaces on the ship, such as the bridge, kitchen, bakery, engine room , doctor’s office, treatment room, radiology office, infirmaries, operating room, cabins, chapel, among other spaces.
With special prices will also be the visits to the Interactive Museum of the Chocolate Factory, which offers a set of interpretive solutions about cocoa and chocolate, with a strong technological and interactive component.
Since 1980, the 27th of September celebrates Tourism. This annual celebration aims to draw attention to the importance of tourism around the world. In 2021, the theme of World Tourism Day is “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”.
