From the 18th to the 25th of September, Circular – Festival of Performing Arts is back for its 17th edition. Promoted by Circular – Associação Cultural and with the support of the Vila do Conde City Council, the Festival will present a multidisciplinary and experimental program that crosses dance, music, theater, performance, and thought, where a wide diversity resides. theme raised by each of the author’s proposals.
The festival kicks off with the inauguration of the exhibition “Membrana” by João Pais Filipe and Mónica Baptista, a co-production with Solar – Gallery of Cinematic Art/Short Films of Vila do Conde. “Membrana” presents a set of sound sculptures, photographs, and videos, resulting from an artists’ residency in Uganda.
Also at the opening of the festival, the dance show “Calçada” is presented at Teatro Municipal, by Brazilian choreographer Volmir Cordeiro. This is followed by a concert by CZN, a project by percussionists Valentina Magaletti, João Pais Filipe, and producer Leon Marks, who bring us their latest album “Commutator” filled with hypnotic rhythms and repetitive cadences of energetic and progressive construction.
On the second weekend of the festival, the album “Peixinho Patriarca Percussão” is released by the Drumming Grupo de Percussion, dedicated to the repertoire of composers Jorge Peixinho and Eduardo Luís Patriarca, in a co-edition Drumming GPandCircular Festival.
The cycle “Questões Practical” (Educational Program of Circular) intersects at the festival with the conference “Essay on deciphering an enigma: Dramatic poetry is the final cause of human life and the world (Goethe)” by the philosopher Maria Filomena Molder. Also in this edition takes place the launch of the Jornal “Coreia” #5, directed by choreographer João dos Santos Martins, a publication dedicated to producing thought around the performing arts. The release will include the performance “Ehera Noara” by Hwayeon Nam which activates the archive of one of the forerunners of Korean modern dance, Choi Seung Hee.
To end the festival, the collective Los Detectives presents “Pienso casa, digo silla”, a play that focuses on the experiences of visionary women from the Middle Ages.
