Vila Nova de Gaia hosts international dance festival Regards Croisés

Promoted since 2012 by the Malandain-Ballet Biarritz Company and idealized as a project that crosses Basque shows in Spain and France, the festival’s geographical cooperation extended to Portugal three years ago, when the organization invited Kale to participate, in Biarritz.

The official kick-off takes place on Friday, at 7:30 pm, with the show ‘Terras’, by Kale, in a work in which three choreographers were invited: Portuguese André Mesquita, Basque Matxalen Bilbao and Companhia La Tierce, from France.

Planned to debut on World Forest Day, on March 21, ‘Terras’ presents itself as the very intersection of perspectives that gives the event its name, due to the different views of the choreographers.

As a sub-theme, the question of “how to live on Earth and issues of sustainability and ecology”, and begins “from a more installation perspective”, reveals Joana Castro, and then “a more vigorous, more virtuous contemporary dance” grows.

Next on ‘Cronique Diplomatique’, on Saturday, a show for two dancers that explores the idea of bodies under negotiation, as can be read in the presentation of the festival, by the French company of Poitiers Compagine Adéquate.

On Sunday, closing, there will be ‘Mutu’, by Miriam Perez Cazabon, a reflection on the current society where personal relationships are oversized while human values are in decline.

The postponement due to the covid-19 pandemic, admits the director, had setbacks at a financial level, because the investment made in March had to be reinvested now, maintaining the support of the Câmara de Gaia, but in circumstances that are also changed to the autarchy.

Even so, the entire program initially programmed was maintained, with the exception of the open rehearsals, which were three and will now be only one, around “Terras”, on Thursday.

The programmed workshops, created around the programming, are an opportunity to experience the shows through the body, with a direct contact with the creators, who guide these sessions with those interested.

The Regards Croisés has already scheduled the return for a second Portuguese edition for 11 to 14 March 2021, the month in which Kale will once again perform in Biarritz with a show.
