Traditional Harvest at Churchill’

Foot treading, regional lunch and Vintage Ports at Quinta da Gricha

For the first three weeks of September, Churchill’s will once again open the doors of Quinta da Gricha (Ervedosa do Douro, São João da Pesqueira, 5130-108) in the heart of the Douro region, for a traditional harvest experience.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, the Quinta da Gricha Harvest Experience invites participants to experience the region’s winemaking traditions for a day, from hand-picking grapes to foot-treading in their 1852 granite wine presses, as well as wine tasting and a traditional Douro lunch.

For a full day, participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region’s centuries-old winemaking practices, starting with grape harvesting alongside Churchill’s experienced viticultural team. The morning includes a break for a rustic meal in the cosy Cozinha dos Caseiros, followed by a guided tasting of four wines, two Vintage Ports and two aged Tawnies, which explore the contrast between bottle and barrel ageing.

The experience continues with a traditional foot treading in the old granite lagares of Quinta da Gricha, which date back to 1852, a symbolic and emotional moment that celebrates the essence of the Douro harvest. More than a ritual to share with visitors, this is a practice that Churchill’s keeps alive out of conviction.

“We are one of the few Port wine houses that continues to tread all of its grapes by foot. We deeply believe that this ancestral method is essential to producing wines of exceptional quality and, by keeping it alive, we feel that we are also giving back to the communities and the identity of this region”, highlights Ricardo Pinto Nunes, winemaker and Production Director at Churchill’s.

After the physical effort, comes a well-deserved rest: lunch is served in the peaceful Pátio das Laranjeiras, with a view of part of the 40 hectares of the farm, and paired with a special selection of Churchill’s wines. At the end, each participant takes home a harvest kit, which includes the official edition t-shirt.

Priced at €185.00 per person, the Quinta da Gricha Harvest Experience is available on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the first three weeks of September. For those who prefer a shorter version of the experience, there is also the Half-Day Harvest option, which includes grape picking, treading and a paired lunch, for R$95.00 per person.
