“Vinhos de Altitude – Serra de São Mamede” brings together more than 100 wines for tasting
December 5th and 6th
The event will bring together around twenty producers to present the wines that best express the unique character of the Alentejo mountains.
On December 5th and 6th, the Church of São Francisco, in Portalegre, will once again host the “Vinhos de Altitude – Serra de São Mamede” event, now in its 4th edition. The initiative, organised by the Portalegre City Hall and partnered with the Alentejo and Ribatejo Regional Tourism Authority, seeks to value the unique terroir of the Serra de São Mamede and reinforce the role of viticulture and wine tourism in the economic and cultural development of the region.
The exhibition brings together around twenty exhibitors, representing almost all the producers located in the Serra de São Mamede, who, over two days, will allow visitors and wine lovers to explore the unique character of the wines produced in the Portalegre sub-region.
Starting at 6 pm on December 5th, the event will bring together producers, chefs, and visitors in a celebration of the best the region has to offer.
To complement the offerings, a gastronomic space dedicated to signature cuisine, entitled “High Altitude Wines & Chefs with Attitude,” has been created in the open-air park of the São Francisco Convent, featuring the participation of local chefs José Júlio Vintém, Duarte Gueifão, Tânia Florentino, and Luís Realinho.
The event program also includes a technical and educational component, highlighting the “Lectures & Conversations” series. This event includes a lecture led by renowned sommelier Manuel Moreira and two roundtables, one moderated by journalist and wine and wine tourism expert Maria João de Almeida, and the other facilitated by the coordination of the postgraduate course in Wine Tourism at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre.
The “Vinhos de Altitude – Serra de São Mamede” event, created in 2021 by the Portalegre City Hall, was born with the purpose of taking advantage of the region’s growing dynamism and valuing the interest generated by the uniqueness of its wines.
Since its first edition, the Municipality has embraced wine tourism as a strategic product for the promotion and enhancement of the territory, whose initial concept involved associating the exceptional characteristics of the Serra de São Mamede with one of the city’s most emblematic heritage elements, the Church of São Francisco, in a clear elegy to the joint recovery and valorization of knowledge, memories, and tangible and intangible heritage.
In its 4th edition, “Vinhos de Altitude – Serra de São Mamede” reaffirms the continuity of a project that combines tradition and heritage with innovation and regional identity. The event consolidates the collaborative work developed in promoting the territory and valuing Vinhos de Altitude, contributing to positioning Portalegre as a benchmark wine destination in Portugal.
This year’s edition has the support of the Portuguese Wine Municipalities Association (AMPV) and the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission (CVRA), reinforcing the commitment to promoting the territory, valuing the culture and traditional know-how of the region.
The Alentejo and Ribatejo Regional Tourism Authority is the leading entity of the PROVERE ENOTUR Collective Efficiency Strategy, which focuses on wine tourism, and includes the 4th edition of Vinhos de Altitude. This initiative is supported by Alentejo 2030, Portugal 2030 and the European Union.
