Last week, the United States Academy of Cinema rejected the Portuguese candidacy of the film ‘Listen’, by Ana Rocha de Sousa, for the nomination for Best International Film, prompting APC to open a new selection process.
‘Listen’ had been the most voted among APC members, in a choice of four Portuguese films proposed for discussion: ‘Listen‘, by Ana Rocha de Sousa, ‘Mosquito‘, by João Nuno Pinto, ‘Patrick‘, by Gonçalo Waddington, and ‘Vitalina Varela‘, by Pedro Costa.
These last three films were again chosen, in a vote that took place between 00:00 on Friday and 23:59 on Sunday.
‘Vitalina Varela’ had its world premiere in August last year at the Locarno Film Festival, in Switzerland, where it won the main awards: Golden Leopard and Leopard for best female performance.
Since then, it has been shown and received several awards at several international film festivals.
The film tells the story of a woman who lived most of her life waiting to go to her husband, Joaquim, who emigrated to Portugal. Knowing that he died, Vitalina Varela arrived in Portugal three days after the funeral.
The 93rd edition of the Oscars, North American cinema awards, is scheduled for April 25, 2021, in Los Angeles, in the United States. Oscar nominations will be announced in March.
