‘Volta a Portugal’ 2020 postponed to 2021
The 2020 edition of the national cycling queen race, which was to take place between 29 July and 9 August, was postponed, on 25 June last, to dates to be determined, and on 16 July, the FPC announced that it was the work so that the Volta a Portugal can take place between 27 September and 5 October, with a reduction from 11 to nine stages.
Podium Events and FPC decided to postpone the 82nd Volta a Portugal in Bicicleta Santander to 2021. The decision was motivated by the context of a pandemic generated by covid-19 that made it impossible to hold an event of this dimension this year.
Among the reasons presented for the postponement, the organization of the race presents the evolution of the pandemic, the state of uncertainty about it, as well as the refusal to authorize the passage and permanence of the test by some municipalities, as well as the unequivocal priority to protect public health.
On June 25, Podium Events announced that it was considering other scenarios and actively seeking to find an alternative date for the event with its partners, still in 2020.
The accomplishment of the Volta had received a ‘green light’ from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and the Government, given the guidelines for the resumption of outdoor competitions of individual modalities and the approval of the health plan for the event.
However, the Municipalities of Viana do Castelo and Viseu announced that they would not receive the passage of the race in their municipalities.
The velocipedic calendar has been suspended since mid-March, due to the covid-19 pandemic, and was resumed on July 5, with a reopening test, in Anadia.
