Leiria is preparing to host, next Saturday, one of the largest gatherings of Volkswagen Beetles ever held in Portugal.
The free-to-visit Beetle Fest marks the 90th anniversary of this icon of the automotive industry and promises to bring together enthusiasts and curious people in the Jardim da Almuinha Grande.
The initiative is organised by the Automóvel Club de Portugal and the Leiria City Council, with the support of several clubs linked to the Beetle universe, such as the Associação Momentos VW and the VW Ar Clube.
This event is aimed at all those who drive or own Beetles, regardless of the year of the license plate. Interested parties can register through Ticketline until tomorrow (June 25). Registration for each Beetle costs €20 and includes a welcome kit, €20 of fuel and several gifts related to the event.
Known as the Beetle or Fusca, this model has become a symbol of different generations and a passion for classic car lovers. This event will feature models from different eras, which have been developed to keep alive the flame of one of the most iconic cars in history.
The cars entered will be divided into the following categories according to their year of manufacture:
- Category E – 1946 to 1960 (Split, Oval and 1200 models)
- Category F – 1961 to 1970
- Category G – 1971 to 1980
- Category H – 1981 to 1990
- Category I – 1991 until the end of Beetle production in Mexico
- Beetle – all models of the new generation
More than just a car show
During the event, there will be discussion groups about the history of the Beetle and interesting facts about the different models. There will also be an area to talk about the care of the mechanics, bodywork and restaurant, among other topics. The programme also includes musical moments, part of the UNESCO initiative “Leiria, Creative City of Music”, a performance by the PSP Symphonic Band and a display of the GNR Moto Carousel.
The Fusca Fest ends with a parade through the city centre.
