Walmart and EDP Renováveis close three wind power contracts
Walmart and EDP Renováveis have signed three wind power purchase contracts, which will allow the construction of three new large-scale wind farms in the states of Illinois and Indiana.
In a statement today, EDP Renováveis says that in total this 233 MW (Megawatt) investment includes 123 MW in the Bright Stalk wind farm (205 MW project in McLean County, Illinois, scheduled to start operations in 2019) and 60 MW at the Headwaters II wind farm (a 200 MW project in Randolph County, Indiana, expected to start operations in 2020).
It also includes 50 MW at the Harvest Ridge wind farm, formerly Broadlands, a 200 MW project in Douglas County, Illinois, scheduled to start operations in 2019.
These wind power purchase and sale agreements had been announced by EDPR in May and July and “allowed the company to meet US installed capacity (3.5 GW) ahead of schedule,” said the company led by Manso Neto .
“The energy purchased by Walmart through these contracts enables us to produce renewable energy equivalent to what could be supplied annually to more than 60,000 Illinois households and 15,000 Indiana households,” said the statement, adding that wind farms “will bring economic benefits to their respective regions and states in the form of jobs and tax payments and even money invested in local communities.”
EDPR North America operates more than 5600 MW in renewable energy projects.
