“Wanderer Songs” < An invocation of José Afonso in the 21st century
January 22 - Porto, Casa da Música and January 23 - Lisbon, Tivoli BBVA
The new project “Wanderer Songs” will be performed live on January 22nd at the prestigious Casa da Música in Porto and then on January 23rd at the Teatro Tivoli BBVA in Lisbon.
Born from an invitation to several contemporary artists, “Cantares do Andarilho” or “Wanderer Songs”, as it is known internationally, is a project of artistic reinterpretation of José Afonso’s musical repertoire, inspired by the historic concert that the musician performed at the Coliseu de Lisbon, January 1983.
These reinterpretations of José Afonso’s emblematic songs were artistically prepared during April 2024, through an artistic residency at Teatro Faialense, in the Azores, which included the participation of several artists, Portuguese and foreign: Musical Director Tiago-Correia Paulo, P.S. Lucas, Lavoisier, Selma Uamusse, Nacho Vegas, musicians Augusto Macedo and Diogo Sousa, as well as Nástio Mosquito and Vic Pereiró in the audiovisuals, giving the songs an additional prestige and elegance, resulting from the images projected at the concerts, the videos and their costumes.
Building on the line-up of this show, based on tradition but also on the musical innovation that was already part of José Afonso’s approach to his music, “Cantares do Andarilho” also brings modernity and elegance, through a new innovative audiovisual show, in an artistic invocation of José Afonso in the 21st century.
“Venham Mais Cinco”, is the presentation single of the project “Wanderer Songs”, was recorded at Canoa Studios, by Nelson Canoa, mixed by Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Spiritualized, GhostPoet) and mastered by John Webber at Air Studios in London.
January 22nd, at Casa da Música and January 23rd, at Tivoli BBVA, will certainly be two unmissable concerts, where the public of Porto and Lisbon will have the opportunity to revisit José Afonso’s repertoire, light of a different approach, carried out by some of the most talented names in new popular music in the Portuguese language:
