“Wanderer Songs (Cantares do Andarilho)”, an invocation of José Afonso in the 21st century
22 January - Porto, Casa da Música and 23 January - Lisbon, Tivoli BBVA
The new project “Wanderer Songs (Cantares do Andarilho)” will be presented live on 22 January at the prestigious Casa da Música in Porto and then on 23 January at the Tivoli BBVA Theatre in Lisbon.
Born from an invitation to several contemporary artists “Cantares do Andarilho” or “Wanderer Songs”, as it is known internationally, is a project of artistic re-interpretation of the musical repertoire of José Afonso, inspired by the historic concert that the musician performed at the Lisbon Coliseu in January 1983.
These re-interpretations of the emblematic songs of José Afonso were artistically prepared during April 2024, through an artistic residency at the Faialense Theatre in the Azores, which had the participation of several artists, Portuguese and foreign, invited by Pedro Afonso: the Musical Director Tiago-Correia Paulo, P.S. Lucas, Lavoisier, Selma Uamusse, Nacho Vegas, the musicians Augusto Macedo and Diogo Sousa and also Nástio Mosquito and Vic Pereiró in audiovisual, conferring to the songs an additional prestige and elegance, resulting from the projected images in the concerts, videos and their clothing.
Starting from the alignment of this show, based on tradition but also in musical innovation that was already part of José Afonso’s approach to his music, “Cantares do Andarilho” also brings modernity and elegance, through a new innovative audiovisual show, in an artistic invocation of José Afonso in the 21st century.
“Venham Mais Cinco” is the presentation single of the project “Wanderer Songs”.
“Venham Mais Cinco” was recorded at Canoa Studios, by Nelson Canoa, mixed by Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Spiritualized, GhostPoet) and mastered by John Webber at Air Studios in London.
January 22nd, at the Casa da Música and January 23rd, at the Tivoli BBVA, will be two unmissable concerts, where audiences from Porto and Lisbon will have the opportunity to revisit the repertoire of José Afonso, in light of a different approach, carried out by some of the most talented names in the new popular music of Portuguese expression: Tiago Correia-Paulo, PS Lucas, Lavoisier, Selma Uamusse, Augusto Macedo and Diogo Sousa.
