Weddings, rallies and marches paint Lisbon in Santo António
The marriages of Santo António, the fairs and the parade of 24 popular marches will color the Festivities of Lisbon, animating the Portuguese capital on the eve of a municipal holiday, motivating the traffic conditioning in the city.
During the morning, at 11:45 am, 16 couples will get married at the Santo António weddings, an event organized by the Company for Equipment Management and Cultural Animation (EGEAC), in a civil ceremony to be held in the Paços do Concelho, followed by religious at the Lisbon Cathedral, at 2:00 p.m.
At night, the couples of Santo António join the traditional parade of the Popular Marchers on Avenida da Liberdade.
With hundreds of participants, the marches have the participation of 20 groups: Alfama – winner in 2018 -, S. Vicente, Carnide, Bica, Bela Flor-Campolide, Ajuda, Baixa, Madragoa, Penha de França, Graça, Beato, Marvila, Bairro da Boavista, Olivais, Mouraria, Parque das Nações, Castelo, Alto do Pina, Alcântara and Bairro Alto.
In extracompetition, the “A Voz do Operário”, Mercados, Santa Casa, and the Popular guest from Ribeira de Frades (Coimbra) will parade along the avenue.
Traffic in the area of Marquês de Pombal and Avenida da Liberdade will be conditioned between today and Thursday, due to the marches, according to the PSP.
From 14:00 today, there will be traffic conditions on the central axis of Avenida da Liberdade, between Alexandre Herculano Street and Largo da Anunciada.
At 17:00 there will be a traffic court on the central axis of the Avenue, between Rua das Pretas and Rua Alexandre Herculano and, as of 18:30, road traffic will be prohibited between Praça Marquês de Pombal and Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio).
This traffic ban will run until 08:00 on Thursday.
The police also advise on the use of public transport, as it is more practical and to avoid driving after drinking.
Today, a great influx of visitors is expected in the city center of Lisbon – to celebrate the patron saint of the capital -, spread throughout the various campuses, with lots of entertainment, barbecued sardines, and popular music.
The feasts of Lisbon began on June 1 and end on the 30th.
