Wim Mertens presents Ranges of Robustness live in Lisbon and Porto

January 31st at Aula Magna, Lisbon and February 2nd at Casa da Música, Porto

The master of minimalism and avant-garde, Wim Mertens, is back in Portugal!

In 2026, Lisbon and Porto will welcome the Belgian composer for two breathtaking concerts, where he will present Ranges of Robustness, his new album, alongside iconic themes from his career.

With a career spanning more than four decades and over 70 albums released, Wim Mertens is a major figure in contemporary classical music. A countertenor with an unmistakable timbre, he is also a pianist, guitarist and violinist, recognised for his minimalist, emotionally dense and hypnotically beautiful musical language.

His career began as a musicologist and radio producer, surprising everyone in 1980 with For Amusement Only — a pioneering album composed entirely of pinball machine sounds. This was followed by landmarks such as Vergessen (1982) and Maximising the Audience (1984), which consolidated his uniqueness on the European scene. He also composed for theatre and film, notably the soundtrack for Peter Greenaway’s The Belly of an Architect.

After the success of the Inescapable tour (celebrating 40 years of his career) and Voice of the Living Tour (in tribute to the victims of the First World War), Wim Mertens now presents Ranges of Robustness live — an engaging show where classics intertwine with new compositions.

On January 31st at the Aula Magna in Lisbon and on February 2nd at the Casa da Música in Porto, at the piano and accompanied by four musicians from his wind ensemble (alto/soprano saxophone, trumpet, cornet, French horn and trombone), Wim Mertens creates an atmosphere of pure contemplation. Each performance is a sensory journey, an intimate encounter between sound and emotion.
