World Dance Day celebrated in Almada with shows and activities

The Almada Dance Company will present a program of shows and activities between April 26 and May 3 to mark World Dance Day, which is celebrated on April 29.

According to the programming, the activities begin on Friday, in Almada, with the realization of an international laboratory resulting from the project CLASH !, supported by the Creative Europe program, under the theme ‘The classic and the contemporary in the formation of dancers’.

The World Dance Day, set up by the UNESCO International Committee on Dance (CID) in 1982, is celebrated on April 29, the date of birth of the dancer, master of ballet and author of the theoretical work ‘Lettres sur la Dance’, Jean -Georges Noverre (1727-1810).

Practical workshops and theoretical debates will be held on Friday and Saturday with the participation of dance professionals from partner companies: Balletto di Roma (Italy), Polish Dance Theater (Poland), 420 People Dance (Czech Republic), Derida Dance Center (Bulgaria) and Sapienza Università di Roma (Italy).

The CLASH! was created to study the state of the art in Europe regarding the encounter between classical and contemporary dance in aesthetic and artistic matters, training of dancers, public development and management of dance companies.

On Saturday, the Almada Dance Company debuts a program consisting of two new creations: “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche: #publicperception”, choreographed by Luís Malachias based on the story of Marie Antoinette, the French queen guillotined during the French Revolution , in a decision of the revolutionary tribunal that marked the history of the country.

There will also be a creation resulting from an artistic residency of the Swedish choreographer Julia Ehrstrand, with a title yet to be announced.

On the World Dance Day itself, on Monday, April 29, at the Cine Teatro Sede of Almadense Academy, a commemorative session will be held to reflect on the impact of the activities of the Almada Dance Company (Ca.DA) along of almost 30 years of work in the city, with the presence of the founder and director, Maria Franco.

In this session will be presented some videos about the work of the company and choreographic excerpts live.

The next day, also in Almada, will be presented the results of the training and social integration projects developed by Ca.DA with the local community.

With choreographies by Rita Judas and Susana Rosendo, students from the Dance and Movement for Seniors class at Ca.DA Escola / Almas-dez and a group of children from the Padre Amadeu Pinto Youth Center present a show inspired by scenes from films that marked the History of a movie theatre.

At the end of the program, on May 3 and 4, Ca.DA presents “Óptima”, a show resulting from the choreographic project, creation of the teacher and choreographer Maria José Bernardino.

Almada Dance Company started the activity as a professional company of contemporary dance in 1990 and develops its activity essentially in the aspects of artistic creation, training in dance and cultural programming.

He has in repertoire more than a hundred pieces of national and foreign choreographers, among them Clara Andermatt, Peter Michael Dietz, Benvindo Fonseca, Paulo Ribeiro, Jean Paul Bucchieri, Filipa Francisco, Cláudia Dias, Guillermo Horta Bettencourt, Daniel Cardoso, Ricardo Ambrózio, Luís Marrafa and São Castro.

He is regularly touring at home and abroad, in Europe (Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Poland, Czech Republic), Africa (Cape Verde), America (Brazil) and Asia (China).
