World emits less than one million tons of CO2 per day due to Covid-19

The world is emitting less than a million tonnes of carbon dioxide a day with the drop in oil consumption due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

[dropcap type=”background”]T[/dropcap]he International Energy Agency (IEA) released a report that global oil demand is expected to contract this year for the first time since 2009.

Due to the New Corona Virus, there are already 90,000 barrels of oil a day less than last year.

The virus led to an estimated emission reduction of 9.6 million tonnes, equivalent to 1.4 times less Portugal’s emissions in 2017.

If the reduction in demand for oil is added to the slowdown in coal consumption, estimates indicate that global CO2 emissions may be reduced by about 7% this year, a figure close to what the planet should achieve in 2020 with the countries’ efforts to comply with the Paris Agreement on climate change.

In these first months of the year, coal consumption in factories fell 36%, and coal production fell 29%, with the capacity to refine oil reduced by 34%.

Data published by NASA less than two weeks ago show that changing patterns of behavior and industrial activity in China have reduced levels of nitrogen dioxide and that with the drop in industrial activities using coal and oil there has also been a drop in emissions of CO2.

In Portugal alone, TAP announced the cancellation of 2,500 flights and in Frankfurt, the German carrier Lufthansa announced the suspension of 23,000 flights until April 24.
