Yann Tiersen returns to Portugal with a solo piano + electronic music performance to promote his new album “Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour”.
In an era of climate urgency, Yann Tiersen is redefining the concept of touring and challenging capitalist norms. From his solo winter tour of Europe from Brest to Tallinn, with no crew and only his dog for company – driving at a top speed of around 100km/h in his van, eschewing the usual trappings of tourist consumerism (hotels, dressing room requirements) and sleeping in people’s backyards, to trips aboard his sailing yacht Ninnog, sailing around Ireland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland, the Shetland Islands, Wales and Cornwall (soon to add the Arctic to the list), the artist has taken his music to extraordinary landscapes and intimate settings, rejecting the trappings of large-scale touring to create genuine connections with local production teams and organizers.
Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour is an album divided into two distinct and interconnected parts, each with its unique sonic characteristics. Rathlin from a Distance comprises eight tracks of introspective instrumental piano. Tiersen explains: “There is something transformative about being at sea. Away from the noise and weight of the world, we are left face to face with the raw, untamed forces of nature – and with ourselves. The waves demand honesty.” He continues: “Rathlin from a Distance is born from this experience. Each piano piece is linked to a place we have visited, but also to a moment of meditation. They are maps to the self. They are meant to guide us to the core of who we are, not the version of ourselves shaped by society’s expectations. It is a call to connect, to be vulnerable and to find solace in the authenticity that comes from facing the forces around us and within us.”
The Liquid Hour is an expansive and challenging mix of musical styles, blending electronics and dynamic psychedelic rhythms. Tiersen explains how an experience at the helm of his sailboat, with Belfast shimmering in the distance, influenced these five tracks: “I think of the wounds left by the systems that crush us, I feel the fury bubbling up – ancient, raw, electric. It burns through me. The water becomes a mirror of my anger. And hope. There is a war to be fought against the suffocating branches of capitalism, which bind our roots and steal our light. It is an erasure of all that is broken. A rebuilding, hand in hand, heart to heart, until there is no room for despair.
