Yes the kings of progressive rock in Lisbon

Sagres Campo Pequeno

Yes returned to Portugal, and were welcomed by many fans at Sagres Campo Pequeno, for a concert that promised a lot, but ended up being a little “lukewarm“, without the spark that everyone expected, after several postponements of the tour.

The English progressive rock band formed in London in 1968, are considered one of the pioneers of the genre, known for their complex compositions, virtuoso musicianship and philosophical lyrics.

The band has undergone numerous line-up changes throughout its history, with more than 20 musicians, from the original line-up, Rick Wakeman, Chris Squire, Alan White and Bill Bruford, none are present anymore, and guitarist Steve Howe is the oldest member, of the various formations that continued the music of the band that came to Lisbon in the company of Geoff Downes, Billy Sherwood, Jon Davison and Jay Schellen.

Yes, released a total of 22 studio albums, selling more than 50 million records worldwide. Some of his most popular songs are “Roundabout”, “I’ve Seen All Good People”, “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, “Siberian Khatru”, “Starship Trooper” and of course “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” which did not make part of the Campo Pequeno setlist.

Despite this, the band took to the Lisbon venue a summary of their career, almost reaching six decades of existence, and after several postponements, they came to Portugal with their tour The Classic Tales Of YES, they performed in a very simple setting, without smoke, fireworks or paper, but with great technical quality that was demonstrated from the first minute, with Steve Howe taking the lead from the beginning.

Vocalist Jon Davison, who even addressed the audience in Portuguese, with a Brazilian accent, did the job well, winning over the audience from an early age, in this his first time in Portugal with Yes.

The band took to Campo Pequeno’s “It Will Be A Good Day (The River)”, “Going For The One” and “I’ve Seen All Good People” in which Howe used an acoustic guitar similar to a Portuguese guitar, which he said having been offered by her sister and only several years later discovered that it had been made in Portugal, continued with “I’ve Seen All Good People”, “America”, original by Simon & Garfunkel, “Time And A Word” from the album with the same name from 1970, “Don’t Kill The Whale”, from the 1978 album Tormato and the first part comes to an end with “Turn Of The Century”.

Without being informed that there was a second part, some people even thought that the concert had come to an end, and were getting ready to leave, but no, we had more Yes.

“South Side Of The Sky” opened the second part, which featured “Cut From The Stars”, “Tales From Topographic Oceans”, “Roundabout” and “Starship Trooper”, a more successful second part.

Although the concert was “lukewarm“, there were still several moments in which the various members of the band showed all their virtuosity and technique, Steve Howe, aged 77, always with a lot of genius, Geoff Downes surrounded by ten keyboards and synthesizers, but always facing the audience, the fantastic sound of Jay Schellen on drums and Billy Sherwood shining on bass.
