In Lisbon, hearts are already beating lightly…
Applications open between February 14th and April 5th
On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, applications open for Santo António Weddings, an initiative promoted by Lisbon City Council and organized by EGEAC.
Lisbon invites the entire city to the 2023 edition of Santo António Weddings, bringing together 16 couples on the 12th of June. A ceremony, divided between the Lisbon Cathedral and the Main Hall of the Town Hall (civil weddings), which is also an unavoidable reference in Lisbon’s popular tradition.
This year participants should be around a thousand people (between bride and groom, godparents, guests, and organization). The involvement of civil society is another strong component of this festival, which is only possible thanks to the sponsorship of dozens of partners who sponsor this initiative. Support that guarantees all the necessary ingredients for its realization, from the dresses and suits for the brides and grooms, passing through hairstyles and make-up, wedding rings, bachelor parties, wedding reception, and honeymoon.
Candidates for Casamentos de Santo António must comply with a set of prerequisites, in accordance with the general conditions of participation available on the EGEAC website, namely the presentation of proof of permanent residence in the municipality of Lisbon of one of the couple’s members. Applications must be formalized between February 14th and April 5th, by filling in the Application Form available at the Lisboa Stores of Alcântara, Baixa, Entrecampos, Marvila, and Saldanha.
It was in 1958 that the first edition of Casamentos de Santo António took place, in the Church of Santo António, uniting 26 couples. An initiative sponsored at the time by the Diário Popular that would be interrupted by the Revolution of 1974 and recovered later, in 1997, by the Municipality of Lisbon – starting to include, in addition to the religious ceremony, civil weddings. Since then, 384 weddings have occurred (264 religious and 120 civil).
65 years later, the spirit of traditions and famous roots will be reinforced with a new exchange of rings and marriage vows, on June 12th, sealing the legacy of the Saint in the heart of the city of Lisbon. And the hearts, by this time, will already be beating strongly, strongly.
