Raymond Devos’ humour takes the stage at the Tivoli BBVA Theatre in January
Elliot Jenicot presents in Lisbon “Les fous ne sont plus ce qu’ils étaient”, a solo inspired by the work of Raymond Devos, the great genius of humour in the French language.
Elliot Jenicot presents “Les fous ne sont plus ce qu’ils étaient”, which translates to “The Mad are No Longer What They Were” in Portuguese, on January 21 at the Tivoli BBVA Theatre.
This is a fun comedy that takes the audience on a journey into the absurd – of language, emotions, and incongruous encounters – with the eccentric and devastating humour of Devos and the art of Elliot Jenicot.
Elliot Jenicot, with the words of Raymond Devos, delves into the meanders of an artist who made himself alone. And who failed? He hides nothing from us about his failed project, the ruins of his life. Cracked walls, loves with fissures, complicated phrases, and the audience caught in his net is shaken by laughter, intelligence, and absurdity.
In “Les fous ne sont plus ce qu’ils étaient,” Elliot revisits the texts of Devos, involving the audience in the sketches, in his convoluted stories, evoking him, taking his sketches and his convoluted stories. Always present, Devos imperceptibly fades away to give way to a generous, powerful, and deeply human comedian.
Halfway between theatre and burlesque, Elliot Jenicot transports the audience through his atypical journey, beginning in the music hall, to his years at the Comédie Française, and presents for the first time in Portugal this solo show based on the texts of Raymond Devos.
Raymond Devos marked the history of humour in France by challenging the French language in its purest state: word for word, expression for expression, which, with art and ingenuity, promoted the meeting between the imaginary and vocabulary, resulting in an explosion of laughter.
Elliot elegantly and ingeniously recovers the work of the “master of puns” and imposes his style, with an incredible plastic presence that will not leave anyone indifferent.
The show is performed in French and has no subtitles in Portuguese.
