Snow closes access to the central massif of the Serra da Estrela

Access to the Serra da Estrela central massif is closed today due to snowfall and adverse weather said the source of the Castelo Branco District Relief Operations Command.

According to the same source, the sections between Piornos / Torre and Torre / Lagoa Comprida are banned from circulation since 05:00.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere foresees for today “periods of rain or showers, that can be sometimes strong, and in the form of hail, decreasing of frequency and intensity in the South region from the afternoon”.

It is also expected “snowfall in the highest points of the Serra da Estrela, gradually descending the quota to 1,200/1,400 meters from mid-morning”.
