“Serpentina” by painter Adriana Molder on display at the School of Arts
To see, from April 13 to July 23, at the Escola das Artes da Católica in Porto
“Serpentina” is the name of the most recent artistic work by the Portuguese painter Adriana Molder, which will be on display at the Escola das Artes of the Catholic University in Porto as of April 13th.
Curated by Nuno Crespo, director of the School of Arts, 9 large-scale drawings will be exhibited and a film will be shown that will meet the prints by Israhel van Meckenem and Mestre E. S. The opening is scheduled for April 13, at 6:30 pm, and admission is free.
Adriana Molder, an award-winning Portuguese painter whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, is characterized by comparing the creation of her artistic works to the way filmmakers prepare their films. This is precisely why Molder’s paintings’ allusions to dreams, memories, and illusions, as well as the world of shadows and smoke, are very present, and her portraits convey somber atmospheres, where the ghostly and cinematographic are predominant.
“The new exhibition “Serpentina” seeks to evoke Anselmo’s serpent muse, a living line, capable of being any shape and causing fright,” says Adriana Molder. In addition to the 9 drawings, the exhibition includes a film that shows the engravings of Israhel van Meckenem and Mestre E. S. A, unique figures of the European Gothic period.
According to Adriana Molder, “Serpentina is also a film, a fantasy in stop motion with a particular love for silent cinema in which drawings and my figure meet and disappear unusually. At the crossroads from which these drawings emerge – the engravings by Israhel van Meckenem, by Master E. S., but also the representation of the cosmos by Hildegard von Bingen or the figure of Salomé by Lucas Cranach -, now enter the moving image and even this mystery that it’s the music: Matteo da Perugia, Conan Osiris and the joy of whistling.”
Nuno Crespo, the curator of the exhibition and director of the School of Arts at the Catholic University in Porto, points out “the School of Arts is also an Art Center where we organize numerous moments of culture in the city and the four exhibitions we hold annually are a reflection of this.” Nuno Crespo also mentions “hosting this particular exhibition is a great privilege. Adriana Molder is an award-winning Portuguese painter who has pieces, for example, in the António Cachola Collection, at the EDP Foundation, at Fundació Sorigue, or the Kupferstichkabinett – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.”
The inauguration of the exhibition “Serpentina” by Adriana Molder, curated by Nuno Crespo, has an opening date set for April 13, at 6.30 pm, and will be on display until June 23 in the Exhibition Room of the School of Arts of the Catholic University. Admission is free and can be seen from Monday to Friday, from 2 pm to 7 pm.
