University of Coimbra promotes national conference on “Sustainable Energy and Climate in Municipalities”

The Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR) of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) will host a national conference on October 25th, Wednesday, on “ Sustainable Energy and Climate in Municipalities”.

The initiative, organized as part of the “OwnYourSECAP” project, will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., at the Center for Arts and Entertainment (CAE) in Figueira da Foz.

According to Fernando Martins, researcher and doctoral student at ISR, «This event is extremely important, as it aims to address essential issues related to energy sustainability and climate in municipal contexts. The conference will bring together experts, government representatives and the university community to discuss concrete solutions and strategies that can contribute to a more sustainable future», he reveals.

During the initiative, topics such as “Climate Base Law and the Impact on Municipalities”, and “Energy Efficiency and Poverty” will be discussed and a technical round table will take place with the participation of the Municipalities of Guimarães, Cascais, Coimbra and Figueira da Foz. At the end, there will be space for the “Discussion Panel – Challenges and Opportunities in the Implementation of Local Energy and Environmental Policies” and also the “Panel representing Portugal in Europe”.

«The main objective of the “OwnYourSECAP” project is to provide a systematic approach to the development and implementation of sustainable energy and climate action plans in municipalities using the concepts of energy management systems (EnMS), climate adaptation in municipalities according to and, not least, innovative approaches that involve all interested parties», explains the FCTUC researcher.

In this way, «it will allow municipalities to strengthen decision-making structures and involve representatives from different departments and stakeholders, ensure political commitment and more resources, ensure sectoral integration and set more ambitious goals towards carbon neutrality and resilience. In total, OwnYourSECAP will involve, train and assist more than 110 target and replication municipalities and 1,500 public employees», he concludes.
