Joaquim Chaves today became national champion at the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro, the 5th and final stage of the MEO Surf League taking place on Lagido beach, in Peniche.
The 20-year-old surfer won the title by qualifying for the event’s semi-finals, overcoming his opponent in the dispute for the highest trophy in Portuguese surfing, Guilherme Ribeiro, national champion in 2022.
This is the first national title for Joaquim Chaves in the main category of the 1st division of national surfing after several titles as a junior in different categories of the Surf Esperanças National Championship.
In the four stages in which he participated, he made consistency his main weapon to be crowned national champion.
1st stage – Allianz Figueira Pro – Did not participate
2nd stage – Joaquim Chaves Saúde Porto Pro – 2nd place
3rd stage – Allianz Ericeira Pro – 1st place
4th stage – Allianz Ribeira Grande Pro – 1st place
5th stage – Bom Petisco Peniche Pro – to be competed
“I went into the heat a little nervous, I can’t lie, but I managed to manage my emotions well. I made my waves without shaking in a heat that ended up not having very high scores. But I think I managed the priority and the choice of waves well and that’s what matters. I’m super happy. I think the consistency this year in the MEO Surf League has to do with my level of surfing. I evolved like I had never evolved before. Last year I took a lot of trips which allowed me to train a lot and this enabled me to reach the stages much more confident. I have been competing in the MEO Surf League for many years and the experience I have gained makes me increasingly comfortable. Now I will focus on pre-season, continue going to the gym, never lose the rhythm of my routines and focus on the qualifying circuit to be on the Challenger circuit in 2024.”
