In Trás-os-Montes there is a case study on water losses
Project was adopted in the urban grid, but is to extend to rural areas
The municipality hosts, on November 20, a Residential Telemetry Meeting and is considered an exemplary case in reducing water waste from the public network: it went from 81 per cent in 2017 to just over 50 per cent today.
The municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros will be the venue for the Meeting on Residential Telemetry in the North Zone, which takes place on November 20, at the Municipal Market, starting at 2:30 pm. The municipality’s choice to host this initiative is due to the success of the ambitious project that this city council executive launched in 2017, which allowed a reduction of nearly 30 per cent in water losses in the public supply network.
Recently, in an investment of around one million euros, some 4300 ultrasonic water meters with telemetric systems were installed, which allow real-time measurement of household consumption and detection of anomalies in the supply network.
This project, the largest in Portugal in this area, is installed throughout the urban belt and transmits water network information to a centralized computer system, allowing effective control.
“We had very serious problems of water losses when we took over the municipal management and, after seven years, we can say that it was possible to save millions of euros to the local public purse,” says City Hall Mayor Benjamim Rodrigues.
The opening session of the meeting will be in charge of José Pimenta Machado, president of the Portuguese Environment Agency, followed by Benjamim Rodrigues and Cristina Reis, from the Macedo City Council, who will present the example of Macedense as a «case study» of good application of residential telemetry practices. «Digital Water – The Importance of Measurement for the Municipality» will be the theme of the speech by João Pedro Teixeira, from Contaqua. Mário Almeida and Ricardo Simões, responsible for Wavecom, a communications engineering and wireless technology company from Aveiro, which was responsible for the implementation of the solution in the municipality, will intervene on the subject «Digitalization and Telemetry – the importance of communications for the Municipality».
