AMADORA BD 2022

From the 20th to the 30th of October 2022, the biggest Comics Festival in Portugal returns to the city of Amadora, with 13 exhibitions, by national and international authors.

  • 4 Rooms (and they are ours!), The Portuguese and Armazém Central are some of the highlights of the program dedicated to the central theme of Amadora BD 2022 – the Portugal-France relationship
  • Also noteworthy is the exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of Spider-Man and an exhibition dedicated to the award-winning work of Filipe Melo and Juan Cavia Balada for Sophie.
  • More than 15 authors, national and international, have already confirmed their presence at Amadora BD 2022

60 years of Spider-Man

The exhibition covering 6 decades of the hero’s history highlights the main authors who worked on the character and the most memorable moments in the life of one of the most iconic comic figures of all time. With special attention to the work developed in Portugal with Spider-Man, the various publishers and television series that have passed through here will be highlighted.

The exhibition brings to Portugal one of the most prestigious Marvel illustrators: Bob McLeod

Ballad for Sophie, by Filipe Melo and Juan Cavia

The work of Filipe Melo and Juan Cavia – awarded in 2021 at the Amadora Comics Awards (PBDA) as the Best Comic Book by Portuguese Author – Ballad for Sophie, conquers a prominent place in Amadora BD 2022.

The work tells us the story of Julien Dubois, a pianist at the end of his life, who, embittered and tormented by an unintended success, agrees to tell the story of his life to an unexpected journalist who appears at his mansion. But under one condition: the article must not be about him. The story he has to tell is that of François Samson, the invisible son of the theater cleaner, whom he met in 1993 at a local contest. That night, one of them won!

Filipe Melo and Juan Cavia join the group of authors who have already confirmed their presence at Amadora BD 2022.

4 Bedrooms (and they are ours!)

Between Lyon and Amadora, this exhibition brings together four authors around female visibility, women’s rights, the many issues that cross these, and other struggles.

In 1928, Virginia Woolf demanded that women “a room that is hers” was hers. Joana Mosi, Patrícia Guimarães, Elléa Bird, and Blanche Sabbah claim this symbolic room and tell their stories from there. The four authors will be present at Amadora BD 2022, accompanying the exhibition at Núcleo Central.

The Portuguese, by Olivier Afonso & Chico

At eighteen, Mário fled Portugal in the trunk of an old car. Left by the smuggler driver on the French-Spanish border, he meets Nel, a young fellow countryman with whom he will discover the adventurous life of emigrants in a slum on the outskirts of Paris: work on the works, evenings washed down with vinho verde, conversations, schemes…

A story of a unique friendship that reflects the fate of thousands of Portuguese who, in the 1970s, fled the Salazar dictatorship and tried, each in their own way, to rebuild their lives.

To accompany their exhibition, Olivier Afonso & Chico are also present at Amadora BD 2022.

Central Warehouse, by Régis Loisel, Jean-Louis Tripp

The Armazém Central series (Belgian publisher Casterman) is written and designed by Régis Loisel and Jean-Louis Tripp, both of whom will be present at Amadora BD 2022.

The action of this work takes place in a rural village lost in the immensity of Quebec, in the 20s of the 20th century, and tells the (seemingly simple and banal) life of the inhabitants of the small parish of Notre-Dame-des-Lacs. To the protagonists, Marie (owner of the only store – the Central Warehouse – within a radius of many kilometers) and Serge (an outsider who arrives in the village and revolutionizes the way of being and thinking of many of its inhabitants, reviving in Marie feelings that she thought for a long time). very lost) is joined by a rich gallery of characters that, over nine volumes, lead readers to think about the meaning and simplicity of life, wishing to return to the most authentic things.

OTHER INTERNATIONAL ATTENDANCES

Among the confirmed international presences at Amadora BD 2022, Marcelo Quintanilha (who visits Portugal after winning the main prize at the Angoulême Festival, with his work exhibited in 2021 at Amadora BD Escuta, Formosa Márcia) and Rodolfo Oliveira (author Brazilian artist that accompanies his exhibition, which will be shown at the Central Nucleus O Infeliz Pacto de George Walden).
