Camino Português de Santiago Central Certified

The Portuguese Way of Central Santiago – Porto and North, with 177.8 km, is officially certified in Portugal, crossing 13 municipalities between Oliveira de Azeméis and Valença.

The certification was published yesterday, December 19th in Diário da República and signed by the Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, Nuno Fazenda and the Secretary of State for Culture, Isabel Cordeiro.

The application was coordinated by Turismo do Porto and Norte de Portugal and had the collaboration of the municipalities involved.

For the Mayor, José Manuel Carpinteira, “This is the recognition of a path of high heritage value. For Valença, this is excellent news that further reinforces this historic and emblematic path of pilgrimages to Santiago”.

With this certification, Valença has both routes, which reach our municipality, certified; the Portuguese Way of Santiago Central and the Portuguese Way of the Coast.

Valença City Council has invested, in recent times, mainly in strengthening signage safety and maintaining the route. On the horizon are the reinforcement of rest areas for pilgrims and the interpretative signage of monuments and sites of interest, as well as the requalification of the Albergue de São Teotónio.

Eurocidade Valença.Tui is the gateway to the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. A route where pilgrims from the Camino Português Central, the Caminho das Torres and the Caminho da Costa converge. In the middle of the international bridge, right in the middle of the Camino, it is possible to have one foot in Portugal and the other in Spain, on the River Minho, with the Tui Cathedral on one side and the Valença Fortress on the other.
