Sustainable development was the motto of the International Youth Day
Under the motto “Transforming food systems: youth innovation for human and planetary health”, the City Council of Gaia marked the International Youth Day (12 August) with a week full of activities for all tastes. Focusing on healthy eating and sustainable development, the program included actions related to sport, the environment, education, among others.
And there were many entities that got involved this week, collaborating with the Municipality so that everything ran smoothly and safely. In partnership with the Crestuma Nautical Club, a canoeing experience was developed for interested young people. In turn, with the Cantinho das Aromáticas, it was possible to have a moment of interaction where the themes of healthy eating were worked on. Quinta do Conde das Devesas was also the stage for the implementation of one of the winning projects of the GOP + Jovem 2019. With Inês Soares, author of the project «Workshops in the open air», those interested had the opportunity to receive a workshop on meditation. There was also time for dance and sport, with moments of pilates, hip hop, golf, padel, capoeira and tai-chi.
The International Youth Day, which is celebrated on the 12th of August, was marked with a walk between the Ponte Luís I and Ponte do Freixo, with the beauty of the Douro River as a backdrop. On the occasion, the participants got to know the heritage and cultural references of the route, with the help of a guide produced for the purpose. At Parque da Lavandeira, participants in workshops on healthy eating presented the results of their work. The day ended with a showcase by the young Gaiense artist João Couto, open to young people and the general population.
For Elísio Pinto, councilor of the City Council of Gaia with the responsibility for Youth, “International Youth Day is always celebrated in a special way in Gaia. We provide a comprehensive program in order to respond to the wishes of all young people in Gaia. And the entire program was defined according to the contributions of the young people: in fact, nothing in Gaia is done in terms of youth policies without their contributions“.
The Youth Week was attended by 106 young people who signed up for the 16 programmed activities, and several actions were open to the general population.
The local authority would like to thank all participants and entities that collaborated in the activities, namely: Refood Gaia Centro, Cantinho das Aromáticas, Crestuma Nautical Club, Quinta do Fojo Golf, Boombox Legacy Dance Association, ARS-Norte , CerciGaia, Students of Apolo Gaia and João Couto.
