Festival Imaterial returns to Évora for the 3rd edition

From the 19th to the 27th of May, the city becomes a place for the transmission of knowledge and cultures between different peoples and generations

In 2023, from the 19th to the 27th of May, intangible heritage in its various aspects is back in the city of Évora, inside and outside its walls, through a program that includes diverse cultural proposals such as music and concerts, cinema, talks and tours by heritage, from various territories such as Portugal, Morocco, Georgia, Mali, Burkina Faso, India, Iran, Mexico, Burundi, Greece, Kurdistan, and Latvia.

In addition to the concert program, which this year includes a presentation by Latvia, the country of Liepaja, a city that will share the European Capital of Culture seal with Évora in 2027, the festival also features a panel of conversations and conferences that address themes in around the concept of the Immaterial that leads to a process of reflection that combines the present with the future. The 7th art is once again represented by a cycle of documentary cinema that intends to be a place for the transmission of knowledge and cultures between different peoples and generations.

With artists from various parts of the world, Évora thus celebrates multiculturalism and its relationship with the “heritage thought and lived”, now in light of the confirmation of the city as the European Capital of Culture in 2027, seeking to follow the example of the traditions it celebrates, and trying to become a reference in sharing knowledge.

The Imaterial Festival, which is now in its 3rd edition, intends to remain on an annual basis, is organized by the Municipality of Évora and the Inatel Foundation, with executive production by Gindungo and artistic direction by Carlos Seixas.

During the 9 days of programming, it will be possible to visit and discover various spaces in the city of Évora that host the program, with live music concerts, conferences, and conversations, films integrated into the cycle of documentary cinema, take tours in the heritage and even get to know the personality of the 2023 immaterial prize.

For Évora City Council, in the words of its President, Carlos Pinto de Sá: “At a time when walls, borders, and isolation try to separate us from the other, the Immaterial is also an open stage for this notion that the other is, after all, each of us born in different circumstances. It is with this perspective and in the wanderings of the Alentejo, that we present the Festival Imaterial”.

As for the Inatel Foundation, this organizational partnership makes perfect sense in the Foundation’s global mission program: “Local music is part of the history of peoples, it defines and identifies us, it helps to tell their lives and to fix them in what is unique about them. They survive through direct transmission and provide new generations with a cartography that signals where they come from and the identity heritage passed on to them”, says Francisco Madelino, President of the Inatel Foundation.

O Imaterial starts from this acute notion that music exists in space and dialogues with it. That cultures relate to each other even when they can ignore it and that they are living organisms, in constant transformation, weaving a thread that connects, permanently, past and present.

This year the Festival is once again betting on a new image for the 3rd edition, which will be presented with the complete program and announcement of the entire poster closed very soon.

The Imaterial Festival has free admission and in the last edition had more than 3 thousand spectators. This year, the objective is to increase the number of visitors and participants in the different sections of the festival, reaffirming Immaterial as a meeting point, in this event, which is one of the events included in the general program of the winning candidacy of Évora for the European Capital of Culture in 2027.
