João Sousa goes down to 59th in the world ‘ranking’
Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer continue as the leading trio in the ranking of world tennis, in the week when the Australian Open begins, while João Sousa occupies the 59th place.
With no significant changes in the ATP world ranking, the first change came only in 16th place, to which Russian Andrey Rublev climbed, thanks to the victory in Adelaide, with Karen Khachanov down 17th and Japanese Kei Nishikori the 18th.
João Sousa, who debuts on Tuesday at this year’s edition of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament, has descended a place in the world hierarchy and will face Argentine Federico Delbonis, 76th in the world at the inaugural meeting in Melbourne .
Among other Portuguese, Pedro Sousa went down two places to 141, João Domingues one to 171, while Frederico Silva maintained 198th place, well above Gonçalo Oliveira, with a three-place drop to 273 .
In women, the WTA leadership remains in the hands of Australian Ashleigh Barty, but Simona Halep has re-entered the podium and is third, in exchange with Japan’s Naomi Osaka, who fell to fourth. Second is the Czech Karolina Pliskova.
Halep was sidelined in the quarter-finals of the Adelaide tournament, won by Ashleigh Barty, but earned enough points to dethrone Osaka in third place.
In women, the best ranked Portuguese is in a distant 567th place, position occupied by Francisca Jorge.
