Jorge Palma presents new album and revisits great hits at Casino Estoril
A reference in Portuguese music, Jorge Palma performs, on March 24th, at 9 pm, in the Salão Preto e Prata at Casino Estoril. The musician takes the stage to present his most recent album Vida and to revisit great hits that marked different eras of his career.
Vicente Palma, Pedro Vidal, Nuno Lucas, Gabriel Gomes, Francisco Palma and João Correia are the members of the band, composed of acoustic guitar, keys, electric guitar, bass, accordion and drums.
Jorge Palma is a rare case in Portugal. Composer and performer admired by his colleagues, loved by the public, too famous for the role of obscure genius, too genuine and rebellious to be a predictable and formatted musician.
His life path is always observed alongside music. An excellent pianist, he only started learning to play this instrument when he was six years old. During his adolescence and alongside his classical training, he began to become interested in rock’n’roll, and in general in American and English popular music.
During the 70s and early 80s, his artistic career was divided between his first phonographic releases in Portugal and the streets and metro carriages of European cities such as Paris and Copenhagen, where he faced the public with a guitar in hand. He finished the Piano Course in 1990 and released the emblematic album Só the following year. In the same decade, he formed “Palma’s Gang” and was part of projects such as “Rio Grande” or “Cabeças no Ar”.
Throughout his career he released several original albums, composed hits and had gold records, having reached the double platinum mark with Voo Nocturno. His work contains broadly transversal songs with themes such as “Frágil”, “Deixa-me Rir”, “Dá-me Lume” or “Encosta-te a mim”, which have become timeless anthems.
He won the José Afonso Award in 2002, and 2008 and 2012 he won the Golden Globe in the best individual performer category. His album Com Todo o Respeito was also awarded the Pedro Osório Prize by the Portuguese Society of Authors.
The most recent period of Jorge Palma’s life is marked by a moment of great activity in which projects such as “Juntos”, in which he shared the stage with Sérgio Godinho, stand out, as well as the celebration of historic albums such as Bairro do Amor and Só, with the latter result in the edition of “SÓ ao vivo”.
In 2020, he celebrated “70 Voltas ao Sol” at Castelo São Jorge, in a show with a chamber orchestra directed by maestro Cesário Costa. He was also awarded the Medal of Cultural Merit of the City of Lisbon and the Order of Infante Dom Henrique.
70 voltas ao Sol was released on CD and vinyl in 2021, having won the award for best album at the Play–Portuguese Music Awards. In 2023 he returned with the new album VIDA, the much-awaited new original work.
The Black and Silver Room at Casino Estoril welcomes Jorge Palma on March 24th, starting at 9 pm. M/6. Price: €35 to €50.
