Legendary Mississippi gospel choir performs exclusively in Porto

19 DECEMBER – COLISEU DO PORTO AGEAS
TICKETS ON SALE FROM TOMORROW 5 JULY

The Mississippi Mass Choir, one of the most reputed traditional American gospel formations, performed at the Oporto Coliseum on December 19 as part of their European tour, “The Gospel Legend Tour”.

The choral group will bring a classic repertoire with gospel hymns. It will be a true soul class with warm and engaging voices under the ministry of hope and love in a full Christmas mood.

A fundamental reference to the American gospel, the Mississippi Mass Choir adds awards and distinctions such as the Grammy, Stellar, Dove, and Soul Train. They were the first gospel choral formation to perform on the Acropolis of Athens in 1995. They also performed for Pope John Paul II at his summer residence and, together with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, managed to win an audience of 20,000 on Christmas Eve 2010 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

From church choirs to Billboard charts, there is a whole journey dedicated to spreading spiritual music and gospel across borders. And in this artistic and spiritual path, a name stands out – Frank Williams (1947-1993), member of the no less legendary Jackson Southernaires and executive director of one of the leading gospel publishers, Malaco Records. Known in the American music industry as The Last Soul Company – its catalogue includes the recordings of gospel artists of the mythical Savoy Records, from Shirley Caesar to James Cleveland, For years this label dominated Billboard’s gospel lists with hits by Walter Hawkins (“Oh Happy Day”), Dorothy Norwood and, of course, the Mississippi Mass Choir.

The Mississippi Mass Choir – When I Rose This Morning

In a long-cherished dream, Frank Williams materialized it at the founding of the Mississippi Mass Choir in 1988. That same year, on October 28, the group would eventually release their debut album. A year later, in the spring of 1989, and with only five weeks in the record market, the album reached number 1 on the list of gospel music of Billboard and Cash Box. This year would also be marked by titles such as “Best Choral Group” and “Best New Artist” at the James Cleveland Convention in New Orleans. They were also awarded the Stellar Awards in four categories: “Choral Group of the Year”; “Record of the Year”; “Best New Artist” and “Best Gospel Video”. 1989 would be the perfect prelude to a formation that would make the stages around the world – from the United States, Japan, Latin America and Europe – a true celebration of love, faith and spirituality.

In 2023, the Mississippi Mass Choir released the single “The Promise” – “a moving testimony of unwavering faith in the face of adversity” – and this year they toasted them with another “Only One Way Home” anthem, in which “every note, every harmony and every beat” reflects an energetic theme “effort to take the sound experience of the audience to new heights”.
