New music documentary film festival in Barreiro and Moita

The new Sonica Ekrano – Documentary Cinema and Music from the Margins festival takes place in September in Barreiro and Baixa da Bath, municipality of Moita, with a program that includes 13 films, six of which are national premieres.

The festival is dedicated to music, musicians, sounds and movements on the margins of massification and popularity, and aims to ensure the existence of a space of opportunity to watch cinematographic works which, even in the era of digital platforms. Access is limited, in a contribution more towards audiovisual inclusion, considering the geographic diversity and the balance between historical perspectives and contemporary narratives.

The 1st edition of Sonica Ekrano will present 13 films, including six national premieres, with Swans, Suzanne Ciani, Delia Derbyshire, Acid Mothers Temple, Conny Plank, Robbie Basho, Arvo Pärt, Gabriel Ferrandini and Adriana Sá as some of the programming targets.

Highlights include Liam Barjer’s “Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho” and Markus Schlaffkre’s “The Albatross Around My Neck: Retracing Echoes of Loss Between Lucknow and Berlin.”

The organization’s highlights also go to “Crestone” by Marnie Ellen Kertzler, “Extreme Nation” by Roy Dipankar, and “Delia Derbshyre: The Myths and Legendary Tapes” by Caroline Catz.

Sonica Ekrano’s program also includes two other documentaries that celebrate and pay homage to the recent wave of rediscovery of pioneering women in electronic music: Lisa Rovner’s “Sisters with Transistors” and “Ciani: A Life in Waves” by Brett Whitcomb.

In the programming, Portugal is represented by “SOA”, by Raquel Castro. Sonica Ekrano’s show is completed with Marco Porsia’s “Swans — Where Does a Body End?”, Reto Caduff and Stephan Plank’s “Conny Plank: The Potential of Night,” and “That Pärt Feeling: The Universe of Arvo Pärt”, by Paul Hegeman.

The sessions will be divided between the José Manuel Figueiredo Cultural Forum, from September 9th to 12th, the Barreiro Municipal Library, from September 13th to 16th, and the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium, on September 17th and 18th.
