Opera “Our love is… – An opera for Natália de Andrade” debut this week

In November, AREPO – Companhia de Ópera e Artes Contemporâneas invites the public to rediscover Natália de Andrade, Portuguese lyric singer and one of the most intriguing and controversial figures of Portuguese music, through a chamber opera with libretto by Rui Zink and special participation of Ana Padrão.

With a premiere scheduled for November 28, at the Center of Arts and Creativity in Torres Vedras, “Our love is…” immerses in the life of the Portuguese lyric singer, recounting her story sensitively and provocatively.

Natália de Andrade (1910-1999) is often remembered for the darker side of her career, having been ridiculed in her last years. Having achieved some success early in her career, she was, at the end of it, ridiculed as a mediocre singer, as crazy, in various television programs and semi-public events. In part, Natália de Andrade is just another protagonist of the underground history of Portuguese culture that was buried under the labéu of crazy or eccentric. He ended his days as an easy joke.

But is that the true story? The opera questions how society at that time dealt with its eccentricity, fear of ridicule and, above all, notions of human frailty. The show explores themes such as mental health and the “bullying” that Natália was targeted, raising issues that remain current and universal.

With a duration of approximately 1 hour, this production will feature an ensemble of four musicians, an actress and two singers, bringing to the scene an emotionally engaging performance. More than a tribute, “Our love is…” is an invitation to reflect on how society, success and fragility walk side by side.

Besides the premiere, the opera “Our love is…” takes place in Torres Vedras on 29 November, 1 December and 8 December in a special session for schools. On November 30th, there is the possibility of seeing the opera at the House of Culture Jaime Lobo e Silva in Ericeira. Tickets will be on sale at the usual places.
