Fidelio was Beethoven’s only opera and took on several versions – the final one, which we will hear, came to the scene in 1814 in Vienna. It is an opera with spoken dialogue, which mirrors the liberating wave that swept Europe after the French Revolution. It tells the story of the love and heroism of Leonore, who cross-dresses as Fidelio to free her husband Florestan, imprisoned for political reasons. In the end, justice and love prevail.

It has become a revered score and contains unforgettable numbers: the «Prisoners’ Choir»; Leonore’s Abscheulicher aria and Florestan’s aria (one of the most difficult excerpts in the repertoire); and the grand finale, in which Love, Virtue and Freedom are joyfully sung.

The power of the music and the vehement message of freedom meant that Fidelio was, in September 1945, the first opera to be performed in Berlin after the German defeat in World War II.
