The Center for Forest Fire Studies of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) presents this Friday, December 15th, a high-altitude balloon that allows the detection and monitoring rural fires.
The demonstration, which takes place from 9:30 am, at the Forest Fire Studies Laboratory (LEIF), located at Lousã Aerodrome, is the result of the “Eye in the Sky” project, led by the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (idMEC) of the Institute Technical Higher Education at the University of Lisbon, and has partners such as ADAI and the Telecommunications Institute (IT).
«This research project is based on the use of a high-altitude balloon to detect and monitor rural fires, among several other uses that can occur before, during and after a rural fire. The operation of the balloon at high altitude allows not only to have an integrated view of the perimeter of the fire and the burned area, but also makes it possible to reinforce the communications system during operations, serving as a signal repetition antenna», begins by revealing Miguel Almeida , researcher at ADAI.
Furthermore, continues the specialist, «This solution allows for an operation time of several hours, without interfering with other aerial means used in managing the incident. In a simplified way, the “Eye in the Sky” solution is compared to a mini-satellite dedicated to an event or an area of interest», he concludes.
During the event, a presentation of the project and its results will be made, followed by a demonstration session of lifting the balloon and capturing and transmitting images to a station on land, ending with checking the reinforcement of the SIRESP signal – Portugal’s Integrated Emergency and Security Network System for communications.
