University of Coimbra professor wins Iberian Architecture Prize
The rehabilitation project of the Paço dos Condes de Ourém, designed by João Mendes Ribeiro, professor at the Department of Architecture (DARQ) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), won the opinion prize, in the category “Interior design”. ” (interior design), from the FAD Architecture and Interior Design Awards 2022.
The FAD Architecture and Interiorism awards have been promoted by the Fomento de las Artes y del Diseño since 1958 and annually distinguish the best works of Iberian architecture. In this year’s edition, 434 works were presented.
According to the award jury, composed of Inês Lobo (president), Paloma Cañizares, Josep Puigdomènech, Pep Quilez, Maria Rubert de Ventós and Jorge Vidal, the rehabilitation of the Paço dos Condes de Ourém «is a work of great sensitivity. The reconstruction of the original walls provides the clues for the horizontal intervention and, however, João Mendes Ribeiro does not follow the original space: he gives options, offers a flexible solution, allowing future alternatives. The exhibition spaces show the same attitude: the option, the potential intervention».
