Anne Frank – The Musical” with a packed premiere

After Porto, the theatre play already has dates secured in the cities of Bragança, Mealhada, Póvoa de Varzim, Tábua and also Sintra, where it will enter the programming of the Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval, in 2025.

“Anne Frank – The Musical” takes the stage at Coliseu Porto Ageas this Sunday (18th) with a full house guaranteed. After the premiere, at 5:30 pm, in the best-known amphitheatre in the city of Invicta, the play – based on the diary of a young woman of Jewish origin who was a victim of the Holocaust and the first of its magnitude in Portugal in a musical theatre format – then goes on stage in the Grand Auditorium at the Vilar Oporto Hotel, from the 20th until the 1st of March (in school sessions, at 10 am and 2:30 pm), and also on the 24th (at 9:30 pm) and 25th February, at 5:30 pm, for the general public.

Bragança, Mealhada, Póvoa de Varzim and Tábua are some of the cities that will be part of the work’s tour across the country in the coming months, but also Sintra, where it will be part of the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center’s programming in 2025.

“Anne Frank – The Musical” is signed by Plateia d’Emoções, from Vila Nova de Gaia, and is based on an original idea by Fernando Tavares, founder and artistic director of the company, who also took on the scenography and staging of the play, and expresses the work of 16 actors and a total of 30 professionals from different technical areas.

The play allows us to see Anne Frank “as she was never shown”, in the words of Fernando Tavares and opts for a “very emotional” ending that bridges the current contexts of intolerance and conflict. And because it is a hymn to friendship, love, peace, family and everyday hope, it has the support of the Irmandade dos Clérigos, within the scope of the initiatives that this institution develops in the cultural area, particularly under the program “Clérigos Out of Doors.”

With original text and lyrics by Hélder Reis, a well-known television professional, the play unfolds through 20 scenes set to music and is expressed through 10 original songs, of great intensity, written by André Ramos. A musician who worked with conductors Sir John-Elliot Gardiner, Paul Daniel, Leif Segerstam, among others, and worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Arts Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta, in addition to collaborations developed for the musicals “Fame ”, “Scents of Light”, “Rent”, “Grease”, “Lion King” and, equally, the Portuguese version of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, by Filipe la Féria.

“Discover the strength, irreverence, perseverance, fear and talent of the young woman who wrote the most famous diary in the world”, through a “unique and engaging musical, full of emotions and values”, the synopsis highlights.

The play’s dynamic scenography reconstructs the secret annexe (now a house museum) where Anne Frank took refuge for more than two years, in Amsterdam, along with seven other people.
