The prestigious actor Robert De Niro and the renowned producer Jane Rosenthal will host the event in Lisbon. Award-winning director Patty Jenkins, actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg and Oscar-nominated actor Griffin Dunne are the first confirmed speakers at the event.
Tribeca Enterprises, SIC, its streaming platform OPTO and the city of Lisbon today announced the first European edition of the Tribeca Festival. One of the most anticipated cultural events of the year, the Tribeca Lisboa Festival, constitutes a significant milestone for the expanding Portuguese artistic community and will take place from the 17th to the 19th of October.
Presented by two-time Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro and Oscar-nominated producer Jane Rosenthal, the festival will consist of an opening night followed by a two-day event in the Beato Innovation District, on Lisbon’s riverfront. Award-winning filmmaker Patty Jenkins, the well-known Whoopi Goldberg and Oscar-nominated actor Griffin Dunne are the first names announced as keynote speakers.
Patty Jenkins is an award-winning writer and director best known for directing the box office hit “Wonder Woman” and her Oscar-winning debut film “Monster.” In 2017, Jenkins became the first woman in history to direct a live-action film with a budget exceeding $100 million with her hit “Wonder Woman.” Whoopi Goldberg is a multifaceted talent recognized for her achievements in the areas of acting, comedy, writing and presenting. Having appeared in more than 150 films, Goldberg is one of only 19 people to achieve EGOT, having won the four main American awards for professional artists: an Emmy (Television), a Grammy (Music), an Oscar (Film) and a Tony (Theater). A Hollywood icon for more than four decades, actor, director and producer Griffin Dunne has cemented his position in the industry through the work he has done in front of and behind the camera. Some of his big projects and box office successes include “Dallas Buyers Club”, alongside Matthew McConaughey, “After Hours”, by director Martin Scorsese, and “An American Werewolf in London”.
The Beato Innovation District, on the Tagus River, home to Lisbon’s Unicorn Factory and a cultural centre for startups, scale-ups and unicorns, will serve as the main stage of the Tribeca Festival Lisboa.
The programming, led by Cara Cusumano, senior vice president of Programming and Director of the Tribeca Festival, in partnership with SIC and OPTO, and Portuguese executive producer Tony Gonçalves, former WarnerMedia executive, will include a curated collection of films from Portuguese and international experiences, live conversations with Portuguese and international talents, immersive installations, networking opportunities and much more. The full programming lineup will be announced this summer.
“At its core, Tribeca is about elevating a community of artists – whether that community is south of 14th Street in Manhattan or across the Atlantic Ocean in Lisbon,” said Robert De Niro, co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises.
“We believe a city thrives when its artists thrive,” added Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises. “It is an honour to enter into this partnership with Impresa, next autumn, to defend the great filmmakers, artists and creators leaving Lisbon at this time.”
Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are acclaimed figures in the entertainment industry and advocates of storytelling. Together they lead the Tribeca Festival, founded in 2001. Rosenthal is De Niro’s longtime producing partner and together they have collaborated for more than three decades on films such as “A Bronx Tale”, “Wag the Dog”, “Meet the Parents ” and “The Good Shepherd”, among others. In 2020, Rosenthal was nominated for an Oscar for Best Film for producing “The Irishman”, starring De Niro.
“The entire SIC and OPTO team is proud to bring the prestigious Tribeca Festival to Europe for the first time. Our main platforms will present the Tribeca Festival Lisboa with the same innovative spirit with which they were created”, said Francisco Pedro Balsemão, CEO of Impresa.
Carlos Moedas, Mayor of Lisbon, highlights: “Tribeca is a festival that fits into our cultural policy for the city, in which we create connections with the neighbourhoods, with the streets, with the people. Culture is not just made by great artists and big events. It’s something that comes from people. That’s the spirit of Tribeca.”
The festival will bring together artists and storytellers from around the world and attendees will be able to attend talks by some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmakers and actors. “I love the way Tribeca highlights emerging talent from around the world,” said Jenkins. “I’m excited to join the festival in Lisbon, to share what I can, but also to immerse myself in Portuguese culture and cinema. I know it will be an incredibly inspiring and enriching experience.”
Tribeca’s presence in Lisbon signals global ambitions for the media and entertainment company, which expanded internationally for the first time between 2009-2012 with the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, the first film festival in Qatar. In recent years, Tribeca has consolidated its presence outside of New York City with annual events in Los Angeles, through a partnership with LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company and the Uninterrupted Film Festival, as well as in Miami through a partnership with Art Basel Miami.
