Summer in 2 Parts * Epicenter

14 intervenções artísticas para descobrir nas lojas da Baixa até setembro

The Summer at Two Times *Epicentro initiative, promoted by Coimbra City Council and Blue House, is revitalizing the heart of Coimbra, transforming closed stores in the city’s downtown into art spaces accessible to the population.

Curated by Blue House and the Agency for the Promotion of Baixa de Coimbra (APBC), the initiative, which runs until September 1st, proposes a new life for this historic area, integrating artistic interventions in the windows of the various selected commercial spaces. 14 artists created works that dialogue directly with the characteristics of the spaces, highlighting the cultural and creative impact on Baixada.

The 2024 edition of Verão a Dois Tempos * Epicenter has been transforming the heart of Coimbra since June, and until September, to demonstrate the power of culture and art. As part of this program, an initiative was created that brings together Blue House and APBC, with a common vision for the revitalization of downtown Coimbra. The initiative thus seeks to reimagine and give new life to stores that are closed or in transition, using them as art spaces and making artistic expressions more accessible to the population.

The central purpose of the initiative is to demonstrate the potential of Baixa de Coimbra when occupied by artists, cultural agents and creative industries, suggesting a new life for this space. The initiative is curated by both institutions, and APBC also plays a fundamental role in connecting with the owners, allowing the availability and transformation of these spaces. The artists accepted the challenge of creating works that dialogue directly with the characteristics of the locations, taking advantage of the limitations and context of the stores to produce art in situ, specifically adapted to each environment.

Artistic interventions are available until September 1st, with works by various artists, such as António Azenha, Beatriz Pestana, Bruno Mingachos, Catarina Parente, Colectivo Mundus, Élia Ramalho, Francisco Aldeão, João Cadete, João Duarte, Maria Nolasco, Ricardo Ladeira, Rita de Almeida, Sara Folhas, Simão Nunes and So Dias and can be found on the streets Visconde da Luz, Adelino Veiga, Largo do Paço do Conde, Eduardo Coelho and Rua da Sofia, highlighting the integration of art into urban daily life and the potential cultural impact on the local community.

Furthermore, a partnership will be launched with the Reabilita Coimbra movement, a non-profit organization against housing poverty in Coimbra, which will be in charge of the intervention in one of the spaces, with the expectation that it will become an active element in the revitalization process of the city. The initiative also includes a guided visit to the spaces, scheduled for the last week of the event, where artists will be present to discuss their works, the date and time of which will be announced soon.

Always confirm with the concert hall or promoter the conditions of access, confirmation of the date or time, ticket place of sale, price, and availability.
