The Conde de Vinhó Organic Goat Cheese produced by Quinta da Caramuja, from Gouveia, won the Gold medal at the World Cheese Awards, one of the most important cheese competitions in the world that took place this weekend in Viseu.
The World Cheese Awards brought together cheese producers, retailers, buyers and food experts from around the world to evaluate more than 4,000 cheeses from 47 countries. The Conde de Vinhó Organic Goat Cheese received the Gold distinction from 240 jurors from 40 countries. The jury evaluated visual parameters, texture and body, aroma and taste.
“This distinction is the result of dedication, work and, above all, the will to do more and better by all those who work in our Farm, from the production of fodder and pastures to the management and milking of animals, to the production of cheese itself including, obviously, veterinary services and quality control services. This distinction is from all who contributed with their work and reinforces our motivation to continue. We are on the right track!”, says Paulo Mota, manager of Quinta da Caramuja, who started producing cheese about a year ago.
Located in Gouveia, Serra da Estrela, Quinta da Caramuja produces its own milk with which it makes the Conde Vinhó sheep and goat cheeses, namely, fresh cheese, cottage cheese, matured cheeses, cured, spicy and, the ex-libris, Serra da Estrela DOP cheese. Launched the Organic Cheese, Organic Kefir and Organic Goat Cheese, produced in organic production mode. More recently, it also launched the Organic Goat Cheese and Serra da Estrela Old Cheese in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Herbs.
At Quinta da Caramuja, the wines of Dão, Serra da Estrela Sub-Region, Caramuja Encruzado, Caramuja Gouveio and Caramuja Branco are also produced, a blend of the 2 varieties.
The Conde de Vinhó Organic Goat Cheese, now awarded by the World Cheese Awards, had already been distinguished as the great winner of the Quesado de Portugal Competition, in the category Organic Goat Cheese (long-curing), promoted by ANIL, National Association of Dairy Manufacturers.
The World Cheese Awards are held annually in partnership with the Guild of Fine Food and have as their mission to highlight local cheese production, gastronomic tourism and culture.
