Companhia do Chapitô presents “AS CRIADAS” a collective creation

Companhia do Chapitô is preparing to take its new collective creation to the stage, the 41st in its repertoire, which will be on stage from February 15th to March 3rd.
A labyrinthine and dark comedy inspired by the asphyxiating universe of Jean Genet.
Two characters emerge as captives of an enigmatic situation. The actors who play them seem out of place, and uncertain, something doesn’t add up. As the situation worsens, we begin to see them struggle desperately to escape the representation of that fiction, but without success. Reality and fiction have become indistinguishable and the only way out is to not stop doing whatever it is you are doing.
A harsh humour runs through this predicament.
It seems that language has lost its function, the only words they have are those of a brief scene, which ends in an assassination attempt that never materializes. From then on, they either continue or cease to exist. And how can we continue other than repeating these words and these gestures, in the hope that something will unlock and free them from this hellish coexistence?
Following the work developed by Companhia do Chapitô, we look for disconcerting humour in this kind of existential tragedy. Starting from questions that haunt us in the face of the absurdity of the world.
Would we make different choices if our lives repeated themselves endlessly?
Do our words and gestures suggest that life is nothing more than the repetition of brief events with echoes in fiction and vice versa?
Until someone or something arrives and wakes us up? Or kill us?
Synopsis:
They love and hate each other.
They await the Lady’s arrival and rehearse her murder with devotion means of escapism that allows them to pass the time and find some purpose in the wait.
Desperation and humour mix as the situation deteriorates. The Lady does not arrive. Someone will have to die.
In a universe of absurd disconnection, two performers attempt an impossible illusion in which they revisit moments of expectation, violence and defeat over and over again.
Humour as a way of subverting power and escaping banality.
A show about optimism and the desire for change.
“As Criadas” will be on stage from February 15th to March 3rd at Chapitô, from Thursday to Saturday at 9 pm and Sunday at 5 pm.
