Amaro Freitas returns to Portugal this summer for two unique concerts.
The concert by Amaro Freitas Trio, with Aniel Someillan on double bass and François Morin on drums, is a “tour de force” of experimentation and renewal of the traditional structures of Brazilian jazz. In this new show, the pianist consolidates his artistic proposal of crossing elements of Afro-Brazilian popular culture with jazz in a single sound spiral.
In the first moment of the concert, he presents themes such as: “Sankofa”, “Baquaqua“ and the vertiginous “Cazumbá” that establishes the relation North> Northeast of Brazil. In the sequence, he contrasts the last frantic theme, with “Nascimento”, a song in homage to Milton Nascimento, and the contemplative “Vila Bela”, both evoking moments of fullness, when the weight of time is unclouded by the contemplation of life and one does not feel the hours pass. In the final sequence, Amaro presents “Ayeye”, a more Afro-pop song, and also presents two classics from his repertoire: “Sangue Negro”, the title of his first album, and “Rasif”, a song that has already reached more 1M views on digital platforms.
The show is a borderless musical flow that naturally connects the diasporas of Afro-Brazilian culture to the vanguard of names such as Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn, Thelonious Monk, and Chick Corea, the latter one of his great inspirations, to whom the musician dedicates the most recent disc.
The Afro-Brazilian diaspora naturally overflows in the style of Amaro Freitas, a 31-year-old pianist, and composer who is one of the leading names in Brazilian jazz today. Partnerships with Milton Nascimento, Lenine, and the rapper Criolo, as well as performances with Christian Scott at the Montreux Jazz Academy, reveal him as the main focus of Brazilian jazz.
With “Sangue Negro” (2016) and “Rasif” (2018), Amaro Freitas gives new life to jazz piano; far beyond the ever-predominant samba jazz, the musician turns to Afro-Brazilian culture and translates local and urban rhythms through a modern and sophisticated language.
Hired by the London label Far Out, the pianist toured with his second album “RASIF” in more than 15 countries. The tour passed through important clubs and cultural centers, such as Casa da Música (Porto/PT), Duc de Lombards (Paris/FR), Unterfahrt Jazz Club (Munich/GE), Ronnie Scott’s (London/UK), Dizzy’s Club ( NYC/USA), BIMHUIS (Amsterdam, NL), Bari Jazz (Bari / Italy), among other cities and events.
“SANKOFA” is his third original album, released in the summer of 2021; The work continues with the original formation of a piano trio and brings influences from the rhythmic Afro piano, under the inspiration of renowned jazz pianists such as Brad Mehldau, Robert Glasper, and Moacir Santos.
Amaro Freitas is a musician from around the world and his work is recognized by specialized critics and the public.
