Angolan musician Waldemar Bastos passed away today

Angolan musician Waldemar Bastos, one of the most renowned Portuguese-speaking artists in world music and the first artist in Angola to achieve internationalization, died this Monday morning in Lisbon, at the age of 66.

Born in the province of M’Banza Kongo, the singer had been awarded the New Artist of the Year award at the World Music Awards in 1999 and the Angolan National Culture and Arts Award in 2018, the most important distinction of the Angolan State in this area.

Waldemar Bastos presented a sound that he himself defined as Afro-Portuguese-Atlantic, marked by autobiographical compositions and influences from African and Portuguese culture.

The artist has been undergoing cancer treatments since 2019, and this morning on July 10, he died in Lisbon.
