António Chainho and Rão Kyao open Music festival in Leiria

A concert by António Chainho and Rão Kyao at the Monastery of Batalha marks the opening of the 38th edition of the Music festival in Leiria, which kicks off on March 20 and takes concerts to 12 municipalities in the Center, until April 25.

In a statement released today, Orfeão de Leiria, which organizes the festival, announced António Chainho and Rão Kyao as protagonists of the opening show in Batalha, with free entry to the Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery. Orquestra XXI closes the 2020 edition of Música em Leiria, with a concert at the Teatro José Lúcio da Silva, in Leiria.

Música em Leiria presents itself as “the oldest in the country, running without interruptions” and appears this year with unprecedented partnerships with Cistermúsica, in Alcobaça, and with Semana Santa de Ourém.

“This year we are going to extend the shows to Alcobaça, and jump over the district’s borders with an unprecedented concert in Ourém”, explains Acácio de Sousa, president of Orfeão de Leiria.

The festival, he adds, “has long since ceased to be a cultural event confined to Leiria and the city’s audiences”, assuming the intention of “building bridges with several municipalities in the region”.

In addition to Leiria, in 2020 the festival takes shows to Marinha Grande, Batalha, Porto de Mós, Pombal, Ansião, Alvaiázere, Castanheira de Pera, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Pedrógão Grande, Alcobaça and Ourém.

The president of Orfeão explains that the program is marked by the “diversity of musical styles”, maintaining “the classical matrix that is in the genesis of Music in Leiria”.
