Aveiro receives the best of Brazilian theater
with two premieres and an adaptation of a classic
Todos São Palco returns to Aveiro with three shows and a workshop, between October 18 and 26. An initiative integrated into the programming of the Portuguese Capital of Culture.
The Brazilian theatre showcase Todos São Palco is back in Aveiro. The Teatro Aveirense will host three performances – two of which are presented for the first time in Portugal – along with a training action by the Brazilian company Teatro Oficina. The initiative will take place in the Municipality between October 18 and 26 and is part of the programming for Aveiro 2024 – Portuguese Capital of Culture.
The sequence of performances begins on October 18 at 9:30 PM, with the national premiere of the solo Hamlet 16×8, directed by Marco António Rodrigues and performed by Rogério Bandeira. The work is based on Hamlet and The Miller’s Son: Imagined Memories, a memoir book of experiences by Augusto Boal, one of the most influential Brazilian creators who was exiled to Portugal during the military dictatorship.
On October 24 at 9:30 PM, another national premiere will take the stage: the show Paranoia, in which actor Marcelo Drummond performs the poems from the eponymous book by Roberto Piva. It is the best-known work of this poet from São Paulo, in which the author reveals himself as a wanderer traversing the city centre, a mythical and libidinous city with a dynamic and underground homoerotic world.
Finally, on October 26 at 9:30 PM, the audience will be able to see Waiting for Godot, an adaptation by Teatro Oficina, under the direction of José Celso Martinez Corrêa – also known as Zé Celso – another major figure of Brazilian theatre who was also exiled in Portugal after April 25. The playwright, who died last year at the age of 86, transformed Samuel Beckett’s classic into an urgent and highly relevant work, incorporating themes and characters that interact with life in today’s Brazil.
Still within the scope of the Todos São Palco showcase, Teatro Oficina will provide a workshop, in which the company’s artists will share the theatrical, musical, and plastic creation methods used by the group. The training will model O Bailado do Deus Morto, an experimental play by Flávio de Carvalho, staged as a ritual performance, directed by Marcelo Drummond. At the end of the workshop, an informal presentation of the results will be held. The initiative is aimed at those over 14 years old with experience in amateur, school, or professional theatre and takes place between October 21 and 24, from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM, at Teatro Aveirense. Registrations can be made via email at agenio@cm-aveiro.pt.
The Todos São Palco showcase is organized by Teatrão (Municipal Theater Workshop, Coimbra) with the curatorship of Jorge Louraço Figueira and co-produced with Teatro Aveirense/Câmara Municipal de Aveiro, TAGV (Coimbra), Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery, Cineteatro Louletano, Convento São Francisco (Coimbra), Centro de Artes de Águeda, Cineteatro da Lousã, Teatro Municipal de Ourém, Teatro Sá da Bandeira (Santarém), A Escola da Noite (Teatro da Cerca de São Bernardo, Coimbra), Casa da Cultura Teatro Stephens (Marinha Grande), and Teatro-Cine de Torres Vedras.
