Black Lights on Palco Grande on the 10th

Almada Festival

On Wednesday, the 10th, at 3 pm, Sentido dos Mestres continues, at Salão das Carochas, with Rui Cardoso Martins; At 6 pm, we have Colóquio na Esplanada, with Ricardo Simões, author and performer of Salgueiro Maia: cartografia de um monologue.

Moderation is by journalist Catarina Neves; at 7 pm, Sans Tambour, directed by Samuel Achache, by the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, has its last performance at the Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite; at 8:30 pm, Music on the Esplanade with Balklavalhau; and finally the Palco Grande at Escola D. António da Costa, at 10 pm, hosts Black Lights.

This show is based on the television series H24 (ARTE/2021), which brought together short stories (based on truth) by 24 authors about the violence exercised daily against women in the most varied situations. Because “nothing is more violent than trivialization” (Mathilde Monnier), Black Lights constitutes another possible way to illuminate this starting point. It does so through texts and choreography, creating relationships between the kinetics of texts and bodies, using words that retain all the tension and violence of the facts, as firm as they are delicate, and that connect to the energy of the dance. It also calls on bodies to bear witness and bring their truth, each body starting from where the words end, to configure the “emotional gusts of wind” that are the core of these testimonies. And because women are the most accurate seismographs of these times of change, texts by nine authors (from six countries) emerge, carrying a story of the body — and eight dancers will be the sisters, witnesses and partners of these narratives. Each one with their words, and their movement, telling the story of their life, with their strengths and weaknesses, starting from the individual to dialogue, and then to the gregarious.

Mathilde Monnier (b. 1959), dancer and choreographer, directed the National Choreographic Center of Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon (1994-2013) and the National Dance Center (Pantin/Paris), from 2014 to 2020. She received the SACD Prize ( Choreography) in 2003 and was made Knight of the Légion d’Honneur in 2013. With Tiago Rodrigues and La Ribot, she created Please Please Please in 2019.
